What is At-will employment?
Laws are written everyday to protect employer/employee relationships. Who really benefits from these laws? If you are employed at will, your employer does not need good cause to fire you. A company can use this doctrine of American law to violate a employees civil rights and they use it often. Companies such as Walmart have had claims from workers being forced to clock out early and finish there tasks off the clock. Red Lobster franchises such as Darden Restaurants are using fear of firing to force workers and wait staff to cover losses the company suffers. Waitresses are required to pay for all meals when a person walks out without paying or they are forced to take a write up. Waitresses by law are only required to be paid 2.13 a hour. The average cost of a dinner at one of these meals is 15 to 20 dollers. So if you work a 6 hour shift and have one customer walk out on you and no tips, you will owe the company for working that shift. You are also required to give bartenders 4% of your gross sales, even if they do not serve any of your customers and regardless of how much you makes in tips. So lets call this what it really is you are at the will of the employer. You can't fire a man for being black ,but you can fire him for no reason.Whats the difference. Where is the accountability? Employment discrimination on the basis of: race; color; national origin; ancestry; religion; creed; sex is a violation of the law. When a company does not have to state why it fired or did not hire a individual, it can easily violate these rights.
Henry Ford-"A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business." We need to bind companies to follow ethical guidelines. This binding was once called the law. Fear was a tool used to keep slaves in line. What has really changed?
